The "Magical" Prune

Prunes have a popular image as a natural laxative because of the sorbitol content in them. Sorbitol is a natural sugar that works like a laxative for many people. Prunes have 15 per cent sorbitol content while most fruits have only about one per cent.

Prunes are excellent for that energy boost and will benefit those who are anaemic because of the iron in it. Prune juice is also an excellent remedy for sore throat.

Food technologists at the Californian Prune Board say substituting prune puree for butter, margarine or oil in traditional baked goods reduces the fat content by 75 to 90 per cent, calories by 20 to 30 per cent and cholesterol down to zero. Prunes add moisture and natural sweetness to any recipe and are a flavour enhancer.
